HealthSciences Institute HealthSciences Institute is a Chicago multidisciplinary collaborative and health care certification, development, and resource organization founded in 2003. HealthSciences prepares health care organizations and professionals for a new health care environment in which chronic, not episodic, conditions are the biggest threats to health. To achieve its mission, HealthSciences applies science and cross-industry best practices in health care, health psychology, leadership and management, performance improvement, information technology, organization development, and change management. HealthSciences maintains an Advisory Board of thought leaders representing a number of health care stakeholder groups and specialties. Preparing a 21st Century Health Care Workforce While new health care strategies, processes, and information technologies, are critical levers for health care improvement, measurable and sustainable change is not possible without an engaged and prepared health care workforce. Accordingly, health care change enablement and workforce development have been major areas of focus for HealthSciences Institute since its founding. In 2003, HealthSciences Institute developed the Chronic Care Professional (CCP) Certification Program in partnership with a core advisory group of professionals from leading universities and health care organizations. The road map for the CCP program was the shared vision of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) for a 21st Century health care workforce. The WHO and IOM called not only for retooling the health care professions, but for "raising the bar" on health care professional training and continuing education through more rigorous application of modern competency-based, interdisciplinary, patient-centered, and evidence-based learning and development sciences and innovations. In 2004, the CCP program was first piloted through funding from the State of Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS). In 2005, two of the three chronic care improvement programs recognized by DHS for excellence in systems change were led or supported by HealthSciences Institute. Since then, the CCP program has been delivered to interdisciplinary teams from health plan, health system, clinic, service groups, and long-term care organizations across much of Minnesota. Based on the Minnesota experience, early interest in the CCP program in the US and Canada grew. The State of Wisconsin later joined Minnesota in funding delivery of the CCP program through county partners, and Marshfield Clinic and Security Health Plan. Vermont later funded delivery of the program to state public program professional staff. And through funding from the Health Ministry of Alberta, the CCP program was delivered to interdisciplinary teams from the Calgary Disease Management Program—recognized by the World Health Organization as a model regional chronic care prevention and care improvement program. Interest from health plans, health systems, and other organizations followed.
HealthSciences Institute Today HealthSciences has led or supported a number of innovative and sustained health care system and organization performance improvement efforts. Today, the CCP certification program is in its fourth edition and serves as the only nationally recognized interdisciplinary, evidence-based, and patient-centered population health improvement, chronic disease prevention and disease management program. The CCP web-based KnowledgeSpace continues to grow and now includes the largest online library of motivational interviewing video. As a fully self-sustaining organization, HealthSciences relies on no public or private funding to support development, operations, or administration. And, over 90% of CCP tuition fees are invested in CCP program development, learning resources, and program updates. As a mission-driven organization, HealthSciences provides technical assistance and full or partial tuition waivers to not-for-profit community organizations and volunteers who provide critical support services to individuals affected by chronic conditions and their caregivers.
